Summer At Last!

Well, we had to wait for what seemed like forever this year, but Summer has finally come to the Northwest with great authority. The sun has been a refreshing and much needed change, and it calls to us to be outside and work in our gardens, stroll the Pike Street Market, BBQ with friends and simply enjoy. Even so, committed knitters never really abandon our needles...we just knit with “cooler” yarns and take on lighter weight projects. What is it about the first sunny day that makes me “need” some new summer tanks and tees? (Don’t say denial of my obsession, because others have tried that one and it doesn’t stop me!). It’s not too late to whip up some cool weather garments using the incredible selection of patterns from Berroco, Classic Elite, and Tahki. I’m almost finished with an adorable lace Henley-neck from Tahki in good old Cotton Classic, so come in and take a look. We have filled our class schedule with lots of quick, one– and two-week classes for smaller projects that are portable enough to take along on summer vacations, and get you an early start on holiday gifts. Speaking of smaller projects, perhaps you would consider helping So Much Yarn with our new Charity Knitting Circle:

 Do Unto Others...

Lately, it is easy to succumb to all of the fear in the headlines: bankruptcies, layoffs, closures….very scary. But, what if you were small….only six years old (or eight, or ten) and your parents could not afford a place for you to live? What if you had to sleep in your car or van every night? How can we even imagine how scary THAT would be? It has been said throughout the ages: Do unto others as you would have others do unto you. It is also a well known truth that by helping others in need, we help ourselves as well. At the very least, we stop focusing on just ourselves and put our energies toward something positive. To this end, So Much Yarn is asking for your help and particpation in our new Charity Knitting Project to benefit First Place School. This is a wonderful K through 6th school specifically for homeless children, located right here in the Central District of Seattle. Though they may have no home to go to at night, this school provides not only a safe place for them during the day, it provides them with an education (real teachers, real classes, real subjects) that will help them possibly change their own futures. The school has it’s hands full, because aside from maintaining a functioning building with enough teachers, they often have to do their best to provide for essential needs of the kids.

This is where we knitters can help! First Place School has room for 54 kids and they are desperately needing hats, mittens, scarves, and small blankets to keep the students warm when the colder months arrive. So Much Yarn is happy to announce our Charity Knitting Circle, every 2nd Thursday of the month, from 10:30-12:30, beginning July 9th. We will provide tea and snacks and any yarns that have been donated, as well as basic patterns for the necessary projects. You will receive a 10% discount on any supplies you purchase for charity projects. I’m even bringing in some of my own “stash” from home and invite you to do the same. Here is my goal: 54 kids = 54 hats, mittens and scarves by October. Eeek….I know that may sound like a lot, but there are over 4,000 of you on our mailing list. If even only a fraction of us each made one item….just think. I hear a lot of you saying you need to try to knit from your stash because of your own budget constraints, so these small projects are great ways to do that. We even scheduled a Basic Mitten Class for those of you who feel daunted by the thumb gusset! Now, I realize that many of you will not be able to come on those Thursdays, but you are welcome to come by at other times for patterns or donated yarn to help us achieve the goal of keeping these kids warm. You can drop off finished items at any time as well. So, let’s get knitting!

Yarns & Books Abound

As you plan your summer knitting, you may want to check out the amazing new “Kudo” from Plymouth Yarns!  It is silk and cotton, knits at 4.5 stitches per inch, has a ton of yardage per skein and changes colors in gradual stripes.  It’s perfect for a simple tank or tee, and some of the colorways are even great for kids.  Meanwhile, an old favorite has arrived back in stock:  Dream in Color “Classy Worsted.”  We just got a shipment and a huge box of Smooshy is due any day now.  Classy Worsted is a perfect choice for the February Lady Sweater and is also great for your first basic sock or mitten class.  When it comes to books,  Sock Innovation, by Cookie A., provides endless ideas for all of our favorite sock yarns:  Smooshy, Happy Feet, Yukon, and Ty Dye Sox.  If you’re not into socks, we have restocked the hit sensation French Girl Knits, along with Simple Style and Japanese Inspired Knits.  Whether you want to take it easy or give yourself a challenge summer, we can help you find the perfect project, so come see us soon!

Stitch ‘n Pitch 2009

One of the biggest symbols of summertime fun is…..baseball! The Seattle Mariners hosted the first “Stitch ‘n Pitch” night four years ago. It was such a huge success that it has not only become an annual Mariners event, but other ball clubs across the country have followed suit to attract the knitters in their areas! This year’s 5th Annual Stitch ‘n Pitch will be Thursday, August 27th. What exactly is Stitch ‘n Pitch, you ask? It is a special promotion which encourages knitters to bring their knitting to the game! In support of that goal, tickets are only $13.00 each, AND you receive a special Mariners Stitch ‘n Pitch tote bag (while supplies last). We have reserved a block of 100 tickets for So Much Yarn, so call now to reserve your tickets. We will have the tote bags and tickets in mid-August, but we’ve had so much interest that we’re taking names now and will call you to come pick them up when they arrive. We’ve sold out our block of tickets every year, so don’t wait. During this event, there will also be a special area where local yarn shops will have displays and merchandise for sale. Yes...you can watch baseball, knit and shop all at the same fun event!
